How I rank my list

This is my most comprehensive answer to who are my top 100 in the sport of basketball—factoring in peak + longevity + impact on winning + impact on the game of basketball + context, not just raw stats or “skills-only” rankings.

Regarding Championships

Rings matter, but they’re a single point of evidence—not proof of individual supremacy.

The point is Basketball is a team sport. No one does anything without their team. And context matters more than most care to admit.

Context Matters

The era someone plays in can tell you so much.

Furthermore, each era has a different concentration of talent in the league. The number of teams in Bill Russell’s era was far fewer than in the present NBA. Some players have the benefit of joining the league after a dynasty falls apart or all-time greats retire.

Why I include coaches

Coaching also matters more than most care to admit.

A great player with a bad coach will have less success that a mediocre player on a cohesive, well-coached team.

Injuries matter. Nutrition, strength and conditioning matter.
